MINING PEOPLE IN THE NEWS: High River Gold, Metanor, North American Palladium, Pro Minerals, Romios Gold, Teck Coal and Vior

Metanor Resources of Val d'Or, QC, has made Pascal Hamelin director of operations at the Bachelor gold mine. He has more than 20 years' experience in the Sudbury Basin in the mines of northern Quebec.

Toronto-based North American Palladium has asked Greg Struble to be its VP and COO, effective Dec. 6, 2010. Previously, he held the same position at Stillwater Mining Company.

Pro Minerals of Vancouver has named Dr. Christian G. Derosier to the position of VP exploration. He is a former director of the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada and a former VP and president of the Quebec Prospectors Association.

Toronto's Romios Gold Resources has welcomed Jack McQuat to its board of directors. He is one of the founding partners of the WGM Group and until recently served as chairman of Watts, Griffis and McOuat. He currently sits on the boards of Sentry Select Primary Metals, NCE Flowthrough and Canadian Income Management. He is also a director of Royal Ontario Museum and chair of the Heritage Governors at the ROM. McOuat is also a director of the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame. He served many years on the board of Franco Nevada, Cominco (now known as Teck Resources) and Diamond Fields Resources at the time of the Voisey's Bay discovery. He has authored numerous articles and publications and served on numerous industry and engineering organizations. He also received an honorary doctorate from the Technical University of Nova Scotia.

Teck Resources of Vancouver has announced the retirement of Boyd Payne, senior VP coal after 36 years. Ian Kilgour will take up the reins of the coal operations on Feb. 14, 2011. Kilgour is currently president and CEO of Campania Minera Antamina.

Quebec City's Vior Inc. has named Marc L'Heureux its new VP exploration. He succeeds Jacquelin Gauthier, who will remain an advisor to the company.
