B.C. mining museum wins awards for restoration work
The Britannia Mine Museum of Britannia Beach, B.C. (near Squamish on the Sea-to-Sky Highway, about an hour from Vancouver) has received two prestigious awards for the $14.7-million restoration of the museum’s heritage site.
The two awards include an Award for Social and Environmental Responsibility from the Association of Mineral Exploration British Columbia (AME BC), and an Award of Merit from the British Columbia Museum Association (BCMA).
The Britannia Mine Museum, which is both a National Historic Site and a B.C. Historic Landmark, was established in 1971. The $14.7-million restoration project included new venues for local arts and culture, and restored heritage mining structures and underground workings to make the site a tourist attraction.
